Republic Airways Willa Beatrice Brown Scholarship
The intent of this scholarship is to champion careers as pilots at Indiana State University, and in so doing, to honor the memory and legacy of pioneering alumna Willa Beatrice Brown (‘31). Brown was the first African American woman to earn a pilot’s license in the United States, the first African American woman to run for the United States Congress, the first African American officer in the Civil Air Patrol, and the first woman in the U.S. to have both a pilot’s license and an aircraft mechanic’s license.
Recipient(s) must demonstrate financial need; must be majoring in Professional Aviation Flight Technology; must have GPA of at least 2.5; must be sophomore, junior, or senior in year of award; Not automatically renewable but recipients may reapply.
